Pre-Surgical Care

If you’re preparing for eye surgery, receiving high-quality pre-operative care is key to achieving the best possible results. At Art of Optiks, our eye care professionals take the time to thoroughly assess your vision and overall health, identifying and addressing any concerns before your procedure. Careful planning and ongoing evaluations not only improve surgical outcomes but also provide peace of mind as you move forward with your treatment.

Cataracts

Preparing properly for cataract surgery is an important step toward a successful outcome. At Art of Optiks, we’ll review your current health and medications during your pre-surgical visit, making recommendations such as pausing certain prescriptions like blood thinners or medications used for prostate conditions. Closely following these guidelines helps reduce risks and ensures you’re ready for surgery day.

  • Stop wearing contacts two weeks before surgery
  • Bring a driver to your appointment
  • Fast for a minimum of twelve hours before surgery if being sedated
  • Use pre-operative eye drops three days before surgery
  • Wash hair the morning of surgery if needed

On the day of your cataract surgery, our specialists will take precise measurements of your eyes to select the right intraocular lens to replace your natural one. This ensures the best possible vision correction and confirms your readiness for the procedure. With careful preparation and expert guidance, you can feel confident your surgery will be smooth and effective.

Glaucoma Surgery

Glaucoma is a progressive eye condition caused by fluid buildup that increases pressure inside the eye, potentially damaging the optic nerve and leading to vision loss. If you’re scheduled for glaucoma surgery, preparation is key. Depending on your diagnosis, treatment options may include shunts or implants, trabeculectomy, or selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT). A detailed pre-operative evaluation will be completed beforehand to ensure you’re fully prepared.

  • Stop taking any blood thinners or flagged prescription medications
  • Take prescription antibiotic eye drops leading up to surgery
  • Limit food and beverages starting at midnight the day before your surgery
  • Bring a driver to your appointment
  • No make-up, moisturizers, or jewelry
  • Comfortable loose clothing

On the day of your surgery, it’s important to have transportation arranged and to follow all instructions carefully. Our dedicated team will be with you through each step, making sure you’re comfortable and ready for the procedure. By planning ahead and adhering to medical guidance, you set the foundation for the best possible outcome.

LASIK

Take the following actions to get ready for your LASIK procedure:

  • Stop wearing contacts three weeks before surgery
  • Bring a driver to your appointment
  • Continue taking regular medications
  • No perfume or make-up
  • Eat a light breakfast or lunch
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing

Post-Surgical Care

Proper post-operative care plays a vital role in both your comfort and the long-term success of your procedure. At Art of Optiks, our doctors carefully monitor your recovery during scheduled follow-up visits, ensuring your eyes are healing as expected. We’ll provide the right medications, address any concerns you may have, and guide you through each stage of the healing process so you feel supported every step of the way.

Cataracts

After cataract surgery, arranging a ride home is essential since you should not drive for the first 24 hours. You’ll also be given protective sunglasses to shield your eyes from light, dust, and other irritants while they heal.

  • Wear provided eye shields as you sleep for three nights following surgery
  • Get plenty of rest to promote proper healing
  • Relax and don’t overexert yourself
  • Take prescription antibiotic eye drops and anti-inflammatories
  • Take prescription pain relief if applicable
  • Avoid bending and any sudden movements for three days following surgery

During recovery, our specialists will explain how to properly clean and care for your eyes. Closely following these instructions will help minimize risks and ensure the best possible outcome from your cataract surgery.

Glaucoma Surgery

The length of glaucoma surgery and recovery varies depending on the type of procedure performed, but most patients can expect to spend about three to four hours at the treatment center. Healing generally takes between three to six weeks, depending on the complexity of the surgery.

  • Avoid rubbing or scratching your eyes
  • Take all prescription medication provided by your doctor
  • Avoid heavy lifting and excessive activity
  • Avoid swimming pools

The morning after your procedure, you’ll return for a follow-up appointment. During this visit, your eye patch will be removed, your vision will be checked, and your eye pressure will be measured. You’ll also receive personalized instructions and guidance on how to use any prescribed medications during your recovery.

LASIK

LASIK surgery offers fast results, with many patients noticing clearer vision within hours. It’s normal to experience some blurriness at first, but this typically improves with rest in the days following surgery. To help protect your eyes and promote healing, it’s important to follow all aftercare recommendations.

  • Utilize eye drops as recommended
  • Do not rub or squeeze your eyes for a week following surgery
  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes at all times
  • Wear provided eye shields as you sleep for three nights following surgery
  • Avoid make-up and cosmetics for one week following surgery
  • Do not use hot tubs or pools for one week following surgery
  • Refrain from sports and exercise for one week following surgery

Attending all post-operative appointments is essential for tracking your progress. At each visit, our eye care professionals will perform detailed exams to ensure your eyes are healing properly and to confirm the best possible results from your LASIK procedure.
